Theories of Consciousness as Reflexivity
Introduction Consciousness is best understood in context, as one element of an interactive waking state in which the greater part of cognitive processing takes place in a nonconscious fashion. But if conscious and nonconscious processing are combined in the waking state, what distinguishes the former form the latter, what is consciousness, and what is its purpose? The answer to the second quest...

In The Problem of Perception, A.D. Smith’s central aim is to defend the view that we can directly perceive ordinary objects, such as cups, keys and the like. The book is organized around the two arguments that Smith considers to be serious threats to the possibility of direct perception: the argument from illusion, and the argument from hallucination. The argument from illusion threatens this p...

I compare a ‘realist’ with a ‘social-relational’ perspective on our judgments of the moral status of artificial agents (AAs). I develop a realist position according to which the moral status of a being particularly in relation to moral patiency attribution is closely bound up with that being’s ability to experience states of conscious satisfaction or suffering (CSS). In a recent, welcome contribution, Predelli (2013) presents a fruitful and powerful framework on how truth-conditional semantics can deal with non-truth-conditional meaning. One of the gifts of Predelli’s contribution is that it presents a unifying theory dealing with seemingly various phenomena often relegated to the pragmatics dustbin. Thus, nicknames, slurs, answering machines/post-its, voca...

We propose a conjecture, that this property is conditioned by a topological property of the processes which implement this reflexivity. These processes may be symbolic, or non symbolic e.g. connexionnist. An architecture which implements refl...
